Hill might not be around
It's the Slantinel, so take it with a grain of salt..

I still think he's make a good assistant coach, or get rid of the 2 frick and frack co-dependents and make him a GM. Heck, he's got just as much experience as Otis has.

Omar, when I first saw the headline of your post "Hill might not be around", for a brief, exciting moment I thought you were referring to Brian Hill, but then I realized it was referring to Grant Hill and the article about him in the Sentinel.
I'm with you... I think it would be great for the Magic to retain Grant in some capacity after his playing career is over.

It would be nice if Grant finally came to the conclusion his career is over this summer.
I still have him pegged as a Joe Dumars/Larry Bird President of Basketball Operations.
With the hopes his first order of business would be to hire a coach.

Since this season is over, and god knows what may happen by next, I tend to agree with the stated suggestions. Although deep down, I wanted to see Grant play one full season with the full force of the young talented players, or any part of this season with Darko on the floor. It would have been a good indicator of where the team would be next season, and what are the deficiencies to be addressed in summer.

Grants way to nice to be a GM,he's all smile's everytime you see him,he's a high priced pretty boy, who's body has given up on him,is he a good guy? Sure! But that doesnt make him a good GM! If you notice, most of the time's you see otis,he always has an even keel look, meaning that he doesnt want other GM's to take him lightly, smiling to much, might give the impression that you can get over on him,so he doesnt do it to the media, only to fans at the games, this isnt a otis VS. grant post, but more of a look at what a GM should be and not be,and a GM thats all smile's aint gonna fly! And as everybody has posted,FIRE BRIAN HILL!

I personally dont think that grants gonna hang it up,his hernia will eventually get better, but playing as hard as grant plays isnt good for the healing process, this summer grant will have a full summer to get over the hernia, and when its totally healed it wont come back unless he takes a nasty spill and reinjures himself, but unlike the ankle, when grant can take some time off he should be ok,at least its not his ankle or shin,b/c then he'd be done, but grant's gonna feel good about himself when he's healed b/c it wont be lingering effects of the ankle, this is different and something that has nothing to do with his legs, and thats a good thing,i think grant has about 3 or 4 good years left,of being better than just the average player, maybe not an all-star,but for all the +'s he brings,he'll be an all-star in our locker room for us!

Darko probably didnt see any minutes b/c mario actually looked great last night,i know new jersy has a small frontline, but when pat came in they were able out rebound us,so they are pretty good, and when mario was out there he pretty much did what he wanted around the basket,i could have found some minutes for darko, but this coach is a moron, mario needs to play with all that body i will agree, but darko should be playing all those minutes pat plays, less pat and get hedo back, and we should be fine! I'll fall in love with otis, and label him the second coming of christ,if garrity is not resigned in the summer!
At 12:30 PM, Big Figure said…
Oh and let me say that,i think intro's sniper shouldnt worry about BSH,just tell him this one word "garrity",b/c if you take him off the team, then coach hill would actually have to play darko, mario & darko would get all the back-up big man minutes! Dwight needs to be better than he was last night,STAY OUT OF OFFENSIVE FOUL TROUBLE(jason collins draws 2 offensive fouls on dwight flooping and all),and work on those freethrows dwight C'MON!

I don't give much weight to a manager's appearance. I have known smiling managers who have been assassins in disguise and I have known mangers that, grim or not, nobody would have taken them seriously. I don't see Otis having the intelligence or the demeanor to become a good GM, but Grant does. I did not like Brian Hill getting into the areas that are, typically, GMs to address. That shows a lack of respect that may not be co-incidental.
At 1:01 PM, Big Figure said…
Well matt,"i dont see" is your opinion and your intitled to it,but i do see where otis has made intelligent decision's and i'm sure others will agree, both trades in my opinion were wins for us to otis's credit, getting us an expiring contract & a young SF who can take over if grant retire's or is waived, then cato who has never given us nothing,he got a point guard and center for the bum,if this is not having intelligence, shit then i'll take it! And what quote un quote demeanor are you looking for, smile's all the time b/c he MIGHT be an assassin in disquise, cmon matt you didnt give anything with that post, you got to come better than that to make a case for grant, otis has already made his case, and its a good one,i dont know anything that can trump getting steve out of here, they didnt wait untill today b/c new york was the only team willing to take francis, and otis got him out of town with an expiring contract, way to go otis!
At 2:26 PM, Matt said…
I have given Otis credit when credit was due on the Francis' deal. You have read my opinion on the Darko's deal. That is a deal that has given us a 10 million dollar "PROJECT" in addition to giving up a 1st round pick. To have some comparison, for 10 million dollars DET is re-signing Ben Wallace, this summer. Let's not forget that Cato's contract was expiring anyways meaning that we would have had 8.5 million + 4 million (to Arroyo) = 12.5 to spend on a center (considering that even without Steve we didn't need a PG). Then there are his comments that are not indicative of high intelligence ... for example the comment that if Darko had stayed in Europe and had come out for this year's draft, he would have gone high (you have read my posting on that comment). How about Fran Vasquez's fiasco? Having been ditched was not enough that the Co-GMs had to go begging the guy in Spain? Was that smart to you? What about Otis' deference to B Hill (a below average coach)? Last night Hill was getting into the areas that are basically GMs' to address... Is that a co-incidence?
As for Grant, as you want me to do better, he is a nice guy in the first place ... that's a plus unless he is proven to be dumb. His statements are well measured which is the first sign of intelligence. The fact that everybody likes him proves that he has good communication skills and gets along well with all. Would you consider that a plus?
The jury is still out, and I didn't want to criticize Otis right after doing a good job. Somethings are better to be left alone. My top mission is to get B Hill out of here before he does any more damage. He might be a nice guy with good intentions, but remember that old say that "The road to hell is paved with good intentions".

One last point ... who supported hiring Brian Hill? It was not John Weisbrod, which supposedly resigned in objection to hiring Hill.
At 3:42 PM, Big Figure said…
O.K. your first case, check it out for yourself (matty guokas already reported)this summer there's really nobody available to make a major impact,so keeping cato's contract became expandable, and we essentially get a free look at the #2 pick, and can let him walk right when grants contract comes off the books if he doesnt pan out,SMART MOVE OTIS,matty already stated this situation a win for the magic! Your next case, this years draft was VERY VERY weak, your best bim man was a 6ft 11 sophomore, with no apparent skill set, what does bogut do great? Nothing!otis was right when he said darko would have gone #1,and the reason is b/c of the scouts, they always fall in love with 7 footers that have the chance to be dirk, they make the hype and most GM's are to afraid of being called stupid to pass over such potential, thats exactly what happened to dumars, but shit, after spending 2 and a half season's with the defending champ, something had to rub off,so you cant blame any GM for taking a look if it fits into the construct of what your trying to do,and for us it does, big time, and speaking of scouts, thats dave's department not otis's,dave's the one over sea's claiming to be keeping up with fran's developement, blame dave for that pick,b/c if otis were the sole GM,we never would have made that pick, its this co-GM stuff thats giving major power to a scout, thats just dumb, and not otis's fault! And Otis didnt hire b.hill, vanderstupid did,he said he was righting a major wrong in magic history, cant blame that on otis either, otis might want coach hill outta here to,we dont know, but we do know that otis has to share his power, and thats not good! And i dont think that just b/c grant talks with intelligence,or communicates well that, that AUTOMATICALLY translate's into being a good GM,boy thats funny, bottom line is you'd be taking a 50-50 chance on a guy with no experience,i dont like the odds,b/c there's better candidates on the market in the nba, there always gonna be poeple with experience, and maybe that guys already working for you,you ever heard if it aint broke, dont try and fix it! Those cases werent any better, still weak!

Big Figure, I am sorry that we don't see eye to eye on this issue, and that's fine. The debate is so fragmented that I really can't wrap my hands around it unless I get into minute details, which would in turn make the situation more fragmented. I just want to clear two things:
1) About the comment on Darko going high in this year's draft, I said "hypotheticals are fools' logic" and that is true in business theory. I added that, good or bad, Darko has a record in NBA so that hypothetical becomes totally absurd.
2) The numbers don't lie, and nobody can contest the fact that we would have had 8.5 + 4 = 12.5 million off our books next year hadn't we gone through with that deal. It is also a proven fact that Ben Wallace is going to be re-signed for 10 million, this summer.
At 4:18 PM, Matt said…
By the way, the first round pick given to DET is not for this year's draft.

Matt, did you read my comment,no where in my comment did i challenge the 2 points you have made, merely showing you that they shouldnt be concerns,(1) i was watching also, when the reporter asked otis he basically agreed with the question,it wasnt like he pulled the question out of the air, then decided to answer it,the man was asked a question, and i agree with his answer, darko would go #1 all over again b/c of the way the scouts gushed over him,it wasnt a hypothetical situation that otis just dreamed up on his own,he was asked a question give'em a break, that one statement is not enough to judge the mans intelligence! (2)nobody's debating how much money we would have had,go back and read my post,i challenge you to find where i debated ben's salary which you chose to point out again, that same 12.5 million would have sat in our pockets, matt there's no one out there this summer,THE MONEY DONT MATTER! And further,my opinion is that we are in better shape than we were a week ago,in 2 summers we'll be the lowest team under the cap,and grant as a GM would be a 50-50 chance at best,my last statement on that subject!

I'm listening to the Brian Hill show right now. There have been many calls on why Hill plays certain players and not others. He pretty much said Darko is going to have to earn all of his minutes, and he isn't going to put him ahead of a guy like Pat, Battie, or anyone else. Here is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. I typed it out as he said it, "Pat Garrity as far as execution wise, is probably the best defender we have on the team". He pretty much went on to include how he boxes out better than anyone on our team, and of course he's a pure shooter and makes big shots like the one he did last night and we wouldn't have had a chance to win if he didn't make that.
I'm not going to comment on what I've been listening to this douche say. This team is in worse shape than I thought. Brian Hill is a moron.

Since the Magic traded Steve-O, and no longer have to worry about his contract, the Darko/Arroyo trade makes a lot more sense now than it might have when it was first made. Arroyo has done a pretty good job with the playing time that has been given him. Now, if only we can convince BHill that Darko needs to play!
The numbers don't lie about Pat Garrity: 5.3 pts and 2 rebs per game in an average of 17.3 min per game so far this season. I bet Darko could get more than 2 rebs in 17 minutes of playing time. Oh OK, I guess Coach Hill likes the way Garrity "boxes out" on defense.

I wonder who our next coach will be? With comments like that bsh wont win enough games to keep his job,2 more years of this bull, and then we get a real coach i hope!
At 8:58 PM, Matt said…
I hope Otis is as smart as Big Figure believes he is, and has the authority to do something about this joke of a coach. What introvert316 quoted him saying about Garrity is beyond retarded. Darko to earn his minutes? For what the investment is on Darko, and his upside potentials, this moron has to spoon feed him. He is probably still gloating about waiving Penny.
At 11:11 PM, Matt said…
I mentioned that I am impressed with the way Arroyo has performed. Still the fact remains that when Jameer is back we have too many PGs. So my numbers for Darko's investment is still at 12.5 million. I hope he proves to be worth every penny. On the flip side you can't leave such investment in the hands of a coach that is clueless, especially if he and others continue to say, and wrongfully so, that they have given very little to get Darko. C'mon guys I need your support to get this most dangerous threat of the team in a moronic coach kicked out. Even Sentinel's blog is crying "FIRE HILL".
At 4:11 AM, Mike from Illinois said…
Matt, it would be nice if anyone of us here was the Magic GM so we could fire Hill, but in reality, if the Magic have another bad year next season, then I think the front office would seriously consider firing Hill, but not before then, unfortunately.

Mike, I realize the hardship ahead, but one should never underestimate the power of public and the reflections of repetition.
