Magic sign Gerry McNamara

The potential rookie crop is now 3 with the addition of Gerry McNamara from Syracuse. McNamara averaged 16ppg and 5.9apg his senior year and was the MVP of the Big East tournament. He played 4 seasons in college. He's likely to compete with Travis Diener for a roster spot as a backup SG. This will get even more confusing for Whit Watson, McNamara is white too.

Second round pick James Augustine of Illinois is a banger who averaged 9.1rpg his senior year. He also played 4 years in college. Right now he has a good shot of earning a roster spot as the fourth big off the bench. He'll be competing against Kasun if Kasun shows up. Last year the Magic spent 1811 minutes playing Garrity (943), Outlaw (355), Cato (300) and Kasun (213). Next year most of those minutes will go to Darko.

All 3 potential rookies are four year college players. All are 22, older than Howard, Milicic and Ariza. All played for big schools in major conferences and went deep into the NCAA tournament during their careers. McNamara was a starter when Syracuse won the title in 2003, Augustine was a starter when Illinois lost to NC in the final game, and Duke made the Sweet 16 all four years of Redicks career including the Final 4 in 2004.

Nice pickup by the Magic! I'm surprised that McNamara didn't get drafted because he was such a clutch player in the Big East Tournament, and as was mentioned, a four-year player.

Some NBA mock drafts had Augustine going late in the first round. Good job by the Magic getting him in the second round. Augustine could beat out Kasun for the team with one hand tied behind his back. He has the potential to be the Magic's best second round pick ever (which isn't saying a heck of a lot I know).

Eric, as this season goes on, there's going to be a lot of fans jumping on the Magic's bandwagon, joining us passionate Magic fans.

I went on Eric's site and left the exact same message. :) He was adamantly defending Billy Knights vision of playing 5 6'8" small forwards at the same time.

    mike,

You're damn right! Fans will be coming out of "no where" next season. I'll be looking forward to it. It should be refreshing; seeing the abuse true Magic fans take year after year. In the end though, we'll be smiling...

Not that it's a big deal, but why do we have advertisements on here?

AND McNamara totally outplayed Kirk Heinrich in the championship game, and Kirk is now the Bulls' starting guard. So I don't understand NBA GMs. Guess you have to be European to get any respect in the draft.

I can't wait to c G. Mac play. Does anyone else see this as the year? The year dwight howard leads us into the playoffs? I think the magic are making all the right moves lately (with the excepton of the Fran Vasquez debackle, i don't know why they wanted him anyway?): howard, reddick, nelson, augustine, darko, arroyo, getting francis the hell outta there, and now McNamara.... they're really coming 'round and look like they could be sneaking up on some people to claim a playoff berth. The next thing they need to do tho, and i know I'll take some heat for this, they need to resist resigning Grant Hill! I first became a Magic fan after we lost the Grizzlies from Vancouver, and I'll admit I was a fan of Grant, but can you really say he deserves the kind-of money Kobe, A.I., and now Lebron make? Coming out of Detroit he sure did, but he's done nothing in Orlando. Get rid of him or at least let him take a severe pay cut, and lets look for some new exciting talent in at small forward and shooting guard.
