Aw Crap! Orlando's Arena to become Amway Arena

InsideHoops.com - Amway Arena - Orlando's Arena becomes Amway Arena

I've not been a fan of the corporate logos that have gone up on all the arenas in America. But Amway! Will Darko have to commit to a garage full of laundry soap before he gets his contract? Will Dwight set up a multi-level marketing program to get voted to the All-Star game? Will Jameer show up at my dining room table explaining the benefits of building both sides of my distribution pyramid?

All you have to do is google "anti amway" to get a feeling for what the name envokes.

And to think I've been feeling so good about this management team lately. Some things never change...

What Mr. DeVos is doing is called "Intra-corporate pricing", in theory, that could offer tax incentives when the corporations are related, whether legally or in terms of ownership interests.

I would be interested to know what is Amway paying the Orlando Magic for the name rights? I may also say since Orlando Magic is showing losses for the recent years, this would not affect their tax burden adversely, but would help Amway in terms of its taxable income.

Regardless, this is a bad publicity for the Orlando Magic for two reasons:

1 - It would show the lack of interest on a viable corporate sponsor to pay what was expected.
2 - Amway's overall public image is not so positive to add value to the Orlando Magic's brand name.

On an additional note, I don't think that GM has a leverage in high level corporate decision making, but rather considered a light-weight in that regard. Otis Smith's huge success in trades that assisted a turnaround, partly attributed to Isiah Thomas's stupidity and Joe Dumar's miscalculation, has no relations to the overall corporate decision making. In other words, this is the same ownership with the short-term bottomline-oriented mentality, at which Otis Smith has no say, whatsoever.

I'm not a fan of arenas and stadiums being named after corporations either, but it's a sign of the times I guess.
